Travelling
Dear sir
madam,
I’m
writing to complain about the Fun Ways Travel holiday my family and I went on
last month.
Your
newspaper advertisement recommended the holiday as being «Seven fun and sun
filled days on a Mediterranean island», so decided it would be suitable for my
family. I realize now that this was a big mistake.
Firstly,
when we arrived nobody was there to meet us. There should have been transport
from the airport to the hotel but there wasn’t. We were able to get a taxi, but
only after waiting for an hour in the hot sun!
Secondly,
when we arrived at the hotel, we found that only one room was reserved. All the
other hotels on the island were full so four of us had to stay in one room.
Thirdly,
the hotel wasn’t a modern building only five minutes walk from sea. It was a
small, old place situated in a mountain at least thirty minutes drive to the
nearest beach.
And
lastly, when we eventually met the tour guide, she was extremely rude to us. I
don’t think she should have been so impolite. She didn’t help us at all.
You can
imagine how angry I feel about spending a lot of money for a holiday which
ought to have been better organized.
Yours
sincerely,
David

2) The games were very popular. Soon there were more events, for example, wrestling and horse racing. The games took place every four years, for a thousand years. In AD 394 the Roman Emperor Theodosius stopped them for religious reasons.
3) In 1887, the Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin decided he wanted to restart the Olympic Games. It took a long time but finally the first modem Olympic Games began in Athens in April 1896. Thirteen countries took part. There were nearly 300 competitors in nine different sports.

1. Traditional delivery
2. Money above privacy
3. The best-known newspapers
4. Focus on different readers
5. The successful competitor
6. Size makes a difference
7. Weekend reading
A. As in many other European countries, Britain’s main newspapers are losing their readers. Fewer and
fewer people are buying broadsheets and tabloids at the newsagent’s. In the last quarter of the twentieth century
people became richer and now they can choose other forms of leisure activity. Also, there is the Internet which is
a convenient and inexpensive alternative source of news.
B. The ‘Sunday papers’ are so called because that is the only day on which they are published. Sunday
papers are usually thicker than the dailies and many of them have six or more sections. Some of them are ‘sisters’
of the daily newspapers. It means they are published by the same company but not on week days.
C. Another proof of the importance of ‘the papers’ is the morning ‘paper round’. Most newsagents organise
these. It has become common that more than half of the country’s readers get their morning paper brought to
their door by a teenager. The boy or girl usually gets up at around 5:30 a.m. every day including Sunday to earn a
bit of pocket money.
D. Not so long ago in Britain if you saw someone reading a newspaper you could tell what kind it was
without even checking the name. It was because the quality papers were printed on very large pages called
‘broadsheet’. You had to have expert turning skills to be able to read more than one page. The tabloids were
printed on much smaller pages which were much easier to turn.
E. The desire to attract more readers has meant that in the twentieth century sometimes even the broadsheets
in Britain look rather ‘popular’. They give a lot of coverage to scandal and details of people’s private lives. The
reason is simple. What matters most for all newspaper publishers is making a profit. They would do anything to
sell more copies.
F. If you go into any newsagent’s shop in Britain you will not find only newspapers. You will also see rows
and rows of magazines for almost every imaginable taste. There are specialist magazines for many popular
pastimes. There are around 3,000 of them published in the country and they are widely read, especially by
women. Magazines usually list all the TV and radio programmes for the coming week and many British readers
prefer them to newspapers.
Sports in Great Britain
It is interesting how many of today’s sports games originated in Britain – football, rugby, tennis, boxing, rowing
and horse racing among them. Of course, horse racing was popular with the Greeks and Arabs long before the
British began to put them into practice; and people had been playing football in one form or another for
thousands of years all over the world. But it was the British who created special rules for these sports and sports
games.
Football is a good example. In the Middle Ages people in Europe, Japan and Asia all played some forms of the
game. A sort of football was also very popular in England, especially as a contest between villages. But at that
time there were very few rules. When the students of English schools started to play football, rules then became
necessary. They were changed several times and by the middle of the 19th century football had become very
much the game that we know and like today. By the way, the first serious football rules were written at
Cambridge University.
A similar story can be told about some other sports. Why did this happen in Britain before other countries? There
are some possible explanations: after the Norman invasion of 1066, Britain was quite a peaceful country. As a
result people had time to develop sports. Later, after Britain’s industrial revolution, English factories were based
on highly organized work and strict time keeping. The same discipline was applied to sport. So uniforms,
referees and punishments were introduced to football and other games. British authorities thought that team
games were good training for future military and industrial careers.
Every country has its own list of favourite sports. What is the British list? There are lots of games apart from
football. Schoolgirls, for example, play a game which seems a lot like basketball. It is called netball. Netball is
different from basketball in many details: for example, the ball is lighter, the court is bigger and netball has seven
players in each team (not five). There is something very strange about netball – it is never played by boys. There
is no biological reason for this, it is simply a tradition. It is popular throughout the English-speaking world, and
the Australians and New Zealanders usually win the competitions.
But the most famous and popular British sport is cricket. Cricket is an important part of English summer life.
You can watch it all day on TV or even listen to it on the radio. News programmes keep you up-to-date with the
score. Men, when they meet, always exchange a few words about the state of the game.
One of cricket’s distinguishing features is that the games are very long. In an ordinary game at a boys’ school it
takes up to a whole afternoon. But the big international games are up to five days long.
