Nowadays, the theatre is less popular than the cinema. Due to the popularity of television and since the appearance of video, theatre has lost a great deal of its attraction. Besides, theatre tickets are very expensive, especially in good theatres. So we can say that a visit to a famous theatre has become a luxury. Although many theatre-goers try to buy a seasonal ticket before the beginning of a new season. It may include tickets to several performances and the price for each will be much cheaper than usual.
Still, the theatre is an inseparable part of the intellectual life of any country. We can even say that the theatre as an art form reflects the state of society and of the mind of the nation. In every country theatre has its own history, traditions and peculiarities.
There are a lot of theatres in Russia and some of them are popular all over the world. In Moscow theatre-goers try not to miss the first nights at the Vakhtangov, Sovremennik, or Khudozhestvenny (Art) theatres.

St. Petersburg also has a variety of theatres, which meet all the tastes. Lovers of classic music never miss a chance to visit the Philharmonic Society Hall. Opera and ballet lovers can go to the Mariinsky opera house and the Maly opera house. Those who are fond of drama visit the Bolshoi Drama Theatre, Alexandrinsky Theatre, Open Theatre and many others. Many new theatres and studios have appeared during the last five or ten years. Many theatres are famous for their excellent companies, sets and great directors.
I’m not a regular theatre-goer, but sometimes I like to go and see an interesting performance. One of my favourite theatres is the Bolshoi Drama Theatre. It is so not only because of its wonderful company, but I like the interior as well. It is quite a problem to get a ticket there; they are sold out long in advance.
The house is separated from the stage by the curtain. Of all the seats I prefer to sit in the stalls or in the dress circle. From there I can get a good view of the stage and can hear and see equally well without opera-glasses. But I don’t like to sit in the balcony.
I usually buy the tickets at the box office. When the day of the performance comes, I dress up and arrive at the theatre about twenty minutes before the performance to enjoy the atmosphere.
I leave my coat and hat in the cloakroom and buy a programme from the usher because I want

to know what the cast is like. At last the performance begins. The house is full. Everybody is deeply involved in what happens on the stage. The setting is marvellous and the costumes are wonderful.
I like the cinema too, even if it doesn’t create so festive atmosphere. When I have free time I often go to see some new film. There is a cinema not far from my house. It is quite a modern building with a very large hall.
Before every show you can see a newsreel or a documentary. In the foyer you can see photos of film stars and advertisements for the films to be shown soon.
When I want to go to the cinema I search for information about new films on the Internet. You can easily find a list of all the cinemas in the city and what is on there today. Then I phone my friend and we discuss what is worth seeing. We like films with a lot of action and suspense, or good comedies.
My parents prefer love stories and musicals. Once they persuaded me to watch the famous “Gone with the Wind”, and I did not regret doing so. The film is based on the famous novel by Margaret Mitchell. It was produced in the 1930s, but you do not feel that it is 80 years old. It is a powerful and moving story. The English actress Vivien Leigh played the main role, and her male counterpart was Clark Gable.

Любители оперы и балета могут пойти в Мариинский или Малый оперный театры. Те, кто любит драму, посещают Большой Драматический, Александрийский, Открытый театр и многие другие. За последние пять-десять лет появилось много новых театров и студий. Многие театры знамениты своими великолепными труппами, декорациями, замечательными режиссерами.
Я не отношусь к завзятым театралам, но мне нравится иногда пойти посмотреть интересный спектакль. Один из моих любимых театров – Большой Драматический. Он нравится мне не только из-за прекрасной труппы, но я получаю дополнительное удовольствие от посещения благодаря его внутреннему убранству. Достать туда билет обычно трудно, они все бывают проданы заранее.

I’ve been J.R.R. Tolkien’s fan since childhood that’s why I couldn’t miss a chance to watch movies filmed by Peter Jackson, a famous Hollywood director. Undoubtedly, watching films is relaxing. Films have always been one of the most favourite kinds of entertainment for people. However, it should be mentioned that cinema attendances have reduced significantly.

Cinemas attract much more people when new blockbusters are on there. Film producers understand they always have to create something new and thrilling to attract spectators. And nowadays due to modern technologies it is really amusing to watch films with 3D glasses, for example. You get the real picture of the film and experience special effects as if you were a hero of the film. You can feel the water splashing right into your eyes or some scary monsters ready to attack you.

There are a lot of people who prefer watching films at the cinema. They believe that cinemas offer a better atmosphere for enjoying films. But to my mind, people watching films at home feel a bit more comfortable and freer than those choosing cinemas. What is more, there is no need to worry about buying the tickets in advance in order to have better seats.

Nevertheless, cinema lovers have opposite standpoints. They consider that cinemas provide the best conditions for watching films: perfect audio and visual quality on a big screen and … popcorn! I must say I also have a great chance to enjoy films with a big home theatre system. And I can pause to get a drink and popcorn from the kitchen.

In my opinion, watching a film at home is much better for many reasons. But anyway I must admit that there should be cinemas too: it is a good chance to hang out with your friends.

Но по-моему мнению, те, кто смотрит фильмы дома, чувствуют себя более комфортно и свободно чем те, кто выбирает кинотеатры. Более того, у вас нет необходимости беспокоиться о покупке билетов заранее для того, чтобы занять места получше.

Несмотря на это, любители кинотеатров имеют противоположную точку зрения. Они полагают, что кинотеатры обеспечивают вас лучшими условиями для просмотра фильмов: превосходным качеством звука и изображения на большом экране и… попкорном! Должен сказать, что у меня тоже имеется прекрасная возможность насладиться фильмом дома с большим домашним кинотеатром. И я могу нажать на паузу, чтобы сбегать на кухню за напитком и попкорном.

На мой взгляд, смотреть кинофильм дома намного лучше по многим причинам. Но, в любом случае, должен признать, что кинотеатры тоже должны быть: это хорошая возможность встретиться и погулять с друзьями.

The cinematography is an essential part of the culture of almost all countries. It is a significant part of the economy of many countries, for example, the United States of America or India.

The cinematography was invented in the late 19th century. It is very popular nowadays. Earlier a few people had TV-set so many people went to the cinema to watch a movie. Though nowadays there are several TV-sets in one house, cinema is still very popular.

Scientists invent many technologies which improve the quality of cinemas. For example, the 3D films are very popular. The 3D film is a motion picture that enhances the illusion of depth perception , hence adding a third dimension . It makes you feel like you are within a movie, a part of it. Some people do not like the 3D films and choose their 2D analogues.

Cinema is a good way to spend free time. Tickets are not so expensive so it is possible to go to the cinema quite often. Films of different genres are shown there so everyone can choose a film to his or her liking. You can go to the cinema on your own or with your friends. It is very interesting to watch action films or comedies with friends. You can also go to the cinema with your beloved. It is a wonderful way to spend a date.

Cinema plays an important role in the life of any society. It is a popular form of art. Lots of people find going to the cinema one of the best ways of spending their leisure time. Due to numerous video facilities, cinema attendances have declined sharply. But there is no denying the fact that the cinema going habit is still a strong one. No matter how large the place you live in is there’s most likely to be a cinema there. There are such genres of feature films as the western, the thriller, the musical, the drama and the comedy. The performance lasts from two or three hours and most cinemas have at least 4 performances a day. Of late cinema screens in this country have been dominated by films produced in the USA. And this tendency is growing. As for me, I’m fond of going to the cinema. It’s a pity, I don’t always have time for it.

A theatre consists of two parts: the stage and the hall. They are separated by a curtain and the orchestra. Actors and actresses perform on the stage and public occupes the hall, the pit, the dress-circles, the boxes and the gallery.

If we made up our mind to go to the theatre we should go to the box-office to buy tickets. Seats can be reserved beforehand.

But we are to admit that theatre is not popular now as it used to be. There are many people who prefer to seat comfortably before the TV and enjoy themselves without leaving their homes.

There are a lot of different kinds of films: theatrical films, horror films, thriller films, popular science films, mystery films, documentaries, and animated cartoons. Besides films may be color or black-and-white, full-length or short, sound or silent, dubbed in mother tongue, three-dimension or wide screen.

We can see films either in the cinema or on TV. As I am often short of time, I have practically no time for going to the cinema. For this reason I watch films on TV more frequently. But sometimes I manage to go to the cinema. I prefer feature films and amusing comedies. I want to relax a little bit, sometimes to have a good laugh. But at the same time I am fond of true-to-life films describing the life of ordinary people, their feelings and problems. Such films move me deeply, they arose the feelings or sympathy or hatred for the heroes. As a rule such films have a deep and lasting impression upon me.

Besides, a modern cinema programme contains advertisements, which are usually shown before the film and are often worth seeing.

In Great Britain and the USA the cinemas/movies sell more than one billion tickets a year.

Movies are shown on TV and can be rented or purchased as a videotape recording. Nowadays people are equipped with video recorders in their majority.

Modern cinema halls are comfortable. There are many rows with convenient seats in the hall. It’s possible for everyone to see the screen vividly. The quality of the sound has changed a lot. At the present time we can meet the highest quality Dolby digital surround. Most cinemas have a refreshment rooms where cinemagoer can get a snack or a drink. American culture brought to Russia popcorn and we can’t but eat it while watching the movie.

Cinematograph is one of the wonders of the modern world. We can’t imagine our everyday life without TV. Every day, every single evening most of people are watching TV. You can watch whatever you like: news, show, films or anything else. There are so many different channels: news, discovery, sport, music, fashion and others. We know a lot of different films and shows, but not everyone knows about history of cinematograph. So, I’d like to tell you about it.
Los Angeles is the world capital of filmed entertainment. First it was a little city with orange trees and great weather. One day in 1908 a group of people from Chicago came to Los Angeles to make a film. Since that day a lot of actors, producers, directors and lots of other workers have been coming here. In 1911 the first studio appeared in Hollywood. About 80% of the world’s films were made in Hollywood in the 1920s. There are many corporations and film companies like:
MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer) – one of the most powerful Hollywood studious of the 1930s-1950s, it produced such prestige films as “David Copperfield” and “The Wizard of Oz”. Among its stars were Greta Garbo, James Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor.
Paramount is a film production and distribution company, founded in 1912. A major studio from the silent days of the cinema.
20th Century Fox is a US film-production company, formed in 1935. It is steel a major studio.
Columbia Pictures is a US film production and distribution company founded in 1924. It grew out of a smaller company founded in 1920 by Harry Cohn; Columbia became a major studio by the 1940s.
Warner Brothers is a US film production company, founded in 1923 by Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner.
Universal — a US studio founded in 1915. In the 1970’s and 1980’s Universal became one of the industry’s leaders with box-office hits from the producer and director Steven Spielberg such as “ET” and “Back to the Future”.
The first genres of American films were melodrama; western and comedy, later appeared adventure and historical films. At that time films were silent and black-and-white. Later films became sound and colorful.
Earlier in Paris in 1895 the Lumiere brothers gave the world’s first real cinema show to an audience of thirty-three spectators. The first film they showed was «The Arrival of a train at a Station». Moving pictures seemed so real that the audience was frightened to death by the train rushing at them from the screen. The spreading in cinematography in Russia started with the demonstration of the Lumiere brothers’ film in May 1896 in St. Petersburg and Moscow and later in Nizhniy Novgorod. The first sound films simultaneously appeared in three countries, the USSR, the USA and Germany at the end of the 1920’s. In October 1929 the first sound cinema house started its work.

There is a theatre in our town. On the stage of this theatre you can see such plays as “Meetings in Vienna”, “Silva”, “The Princess of Circus” and others. The theatre is very popular in the South of Russia. In spring the actor of this theatre played on the stages of Moscow. There are many talented actors in the theatre and some of them are known all over the region. They are Molchanova, Zaiseva, Smirnov, Aliev and others. I have seen the play “Mister X” and I liked it very much.

But we are to admit that theatre is not so popular now as it used to be. There are many people who prefer to seat comfortably in front of the TV and enjoy themselves without leaving their homes.

Usually we see films either in the cinema or on TV. But from time to time I go to the cinema. My favorite film is “Romeo and Juliet”. The Italian director Franco Zeffirelli, produced a masterpiece in this adaptation. The costumes are brilliant, the actors are wonderful, the music by is perfect, and the lines are delivered beautifully. The movie starred Leonard Whiting (a British actor, who played Romeo) and Olivia Hussey (Juliet). They were young when they filmed the Classic, 17 and 15 years, respectably. This movie is one of the most realistic interpretations of William Shakespeare’s Tragedy.

We can’t live without music. We like to listen to music, we play musical instruments.

Music reflects people’s mood & emotions. As for me I enjoy several musical styles: pop, rock, rap, electronic and others. But I dislike metal, hard rock, country and blues.
